Frequently Asked Questions
Will I feel welcome?
Yes! Tell me about what you need, and how you want to be known. This service maintains an approach that does not discriminate on grounds of culture, sex, gender, sexual orientation, relationship diversity, physical or mental ability, race, colour, age, ethnicity, social origin, religion or belief, or relationship status.
How much does it cost?
The first appointment is free and lasts 30 minutes – so you can check I’m the right counsellor for you. The cost for each hour-long session is £50.
How many sessions?
I will ask how many sessions you need when we meet; and we will be guided by this. You may want just a few sessions, or you might be considering longer work. We will review this regularly, and adapt if required. Sessions are usually weekly.
What's the 1st session like?
During the first full session, you will be able to tell me about yourself (at your pace). I will ask you about your reasons for seeking therapy, and what you hope to seek from the process. I will talk with you about confidentiality, and how I look after your information.
When is A.J.'s availability?
All my counselling takes place during weekday evenings; and is delivered either online, via Zoom calls, or over the phone.
Where can I see more info?
I am registered with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy. This means I follow professional standards. The BACP site has lots of useful information (www.bacp.co.uk) about the guidelines that I follow, and a Help Service for counselling clients themselves. You can also find articles and videos about therapy.
How does counselling work?
A counsellor helps you gain insight into your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and how you are affected by things that happen. You are there with your consent: a counsellor will not tell you what to do. Counselling is a safe space, so you can talk freely – you decide what to talk about, and how/when to talk about it. Confidentiality is crucial to this; and so is the counsellor’s acceptance – you know that whatever you talk about, it’s going to be okay. Being heard and accepted can help you gain control in your life, and help you work out what you want to do.
What if I need to cancel?
If you contact me more than 24 hours before the appointment, there will be no fee for the cancelled session. If you cancel less than 24 hours before the start of the session, there is a fee of £20. If no notice is given, the full fee will be applicable.
How can I contact A.J.?
Contact me either on 07716732633 or via ajquarmby33@gmail.com. If you leave a message asking me to contact you, please state if it is safe to leave voicemail messages on your phone.
